Pride and Prejudice
Get hold of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Does one really have to elaborate? This is so well written and engaging it holds up against "modern" literature in most aspects. The action is so subtle it's barely there, but you find yourself caught up in it none the less.
I love this book and - when the world around me seems unbearably cruel and vulgar - I hide from it with this precious gem...

I just picked up a copy of "Emma", completely mortified at the realization I had never actually read any Jane Austin. I can quote it and talk about what scholars have said and tell you all about the characters. How bizarre, huh? I'm loving "Emma" so far. "Pride and Prejudice" is next!
I actually never read Emma, just saw the movie - but I'm sure it's a great read. I love J Austin's style of writing (in P&P), the dialogues and all; she must have been a very witty and clever woman to chat with!
